Kakadu is a name of the first coffee shop that opened in Korea during the Japanese colonial period.
This novel by a renowned Korean author is set in the very place that existed in the 1930s and I was honored to be able to illustrate the cover.
When I first read the entire novel, I envisioned the characters and antique items in the cafe, all intertwined in the whirlwind of fate, tragedy and hope, thus the scribbling of swirling lines around the brick building where the cafe resided.

박서련 작가님의 신작 소설 '카카듀'의 표지 일러스트 작업을 의뢰받고 책을 하루 만에 완독했던 기억이 납니다. 경성시대 건물 양식들, 패션 스타일, 커피 문화 등 다양한 정보를 찾아보며 재미있게 작업했고, 긴 여운을 남기는 흥미진진한 소설책의 표지를 그릴 수 있게되어 영광입니다. 카카듀 대박나길 바랍니다! 

 

카카듀 작업을 마치고 최근에 유명한 출판사 (특별히 아동출판물로 ) Phaidon 사와

이번 크리스마스에 판매될 예정인 아동 전집류에 일러스트레이션 작업 계약을 하고

현재 매우 바쁘게 작업 중이라 다른 그림을 그릴 여유가 없다고 한다.

이제 막 대학원을 졸업한 신진 작가가 Phaidon 에서 인정 받았다는 사실은

아주 획기적이라고 기뻐하는 딸아이의 모습에 부모로서 또한 감사한 마음.

Phaidon사의 계약 작품 양이 많아 매일 밤 늦게까지 쉴 틈이 없이 9월말까지는

작업해야한다는데 공교롭게도 다른 회사에서도 작업 의뢰가 온 것들을 사양해야 

했다고..아무튼 IT 쪽의 경력을 전부 포기하고 새로운 분야에 도전하면서 

그래도 순항을 하고 있는 것 같아 감사하는 마음이다.

Bookstores in any city are my favorite places to visit. This piece was inspired by the City Lights Bookstore in North Beach. I've only been there once but really loved it. .
