안녕하세요 Joyce, 리스크에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요?

제가 감수한 가장 큰 리스크는 아트학교에 가려고 10년 동안의 IT 기업 마케팅 경력을

떠나는 것이었습니다.
그래서 저는 사람들이 자신의 경력과 관련하여 감수하는 리스크에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

저의 경우에는 그 결정으로 인해 제 인생 전체가 바뀌었고  지금은 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로

풀타임으로 일하고 있습니다.
그전에는 그림을 그린적이 별로 없었지만, 제 머릿속의 이미지들에게 생명력을 불어넣는 

아이디어를  막연하게 갈망했습니다.
예술 분야의 경력을 쌓기 위해 직장을 그만두는 것은 확실히 비합리적이고 위험한

시도였습니다. 하지만 그 결정을 내릴 때 제 인생에는 공짜가 없다는 것을 알고 있던

시점이었기 때문에 모든 것이 그런대로 저에게는 꽤 잘 감내할 수 있었습니다.
당시 수많은 시간 동안 불확실함, 부정, 좌절 등등을 감내해야만 했었습니다.
익숙하지 않은 것에 대한 문을 여는 결정에 직면했을 때 우리는 "만약에 " 라는 생각을

너무 많이 하곤 합니다.

그런데 돌이켜보면 제가 이런 과감한  이직 결정을 할 수 있었던 것은  미래에 이 결정으로

일이 잘 풀려 아티스트로서  얼마나 제 미래가 신나게 펼쳐질 것인지를 생각하는 것에만 

주로 집중을 했고 즉시 실행에 옮겼습니다.

살고 있는 환경을 그립니다.
저는 샌프란시스코 도시 거리의 풍경을 그리는 것을 좋아하며
밖에 돌아다니는 모든 사람들뿐만 아니라 음식과 꽃을 그리는 것도 좋아합니다.
전반적으로 제 일러스트레이션은 긍정성, 따뜻함, 다양성, 사랑에 중점을 둡니다.
앞서 언급했듯이 저는 예술 분야에서 경력을 쌓기 위해 마케팅 분야의 일을 하던 

직장을 떠났습니다. 

당시 저는 이미 앞으로의 제  경력이 어디로 향할지 예측할 수 있을 것 같은 지점에

도달했었습니다.
당시 일 중독자처럼 정말 열심히 일을 했고  주말에도 항상 노트북을 끼고 일을 하면서

시간을  보냈습니다. 당시 일에 대한 보상은 준수했지만 어느 순간 이 모든 일에

대한 저의 노력과 헌신이 제 것이라고 할만한 것에 쏟아 부을 수 있으면 얼마나 좋을까 하는

생각을 하게 되었습니다.

그리고 언젠가는 그 일을 정말 잘하게 될 것이라는 생각도 했지요.

저는 일러스트레이션을 좋아했고 아마도 그것이 내 인생의 다음 열정이 될 수도 있을

것이라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다..

저는 아트 스쿨에 등록했고, 두 달 만에 코로나19가 닥쳤습니다.
팬데믹이 완화될 때까지 홈 스튜디오에서 줌으로  페인팅 및 드로잉 수업을 들었습니다.
학교에 몇 학기 다니면서 저는 프로 일러스트레이터가 되는 것이 얼마나 힘든 일인지

깨닫게 되었습니다.특별히 저처럼 사전  경험이 거의 없는 사람으로서요.
저는 그래서 더 열심히 일했고, 실력을 향상시키기 위해 가능한 한. 수면 시간을 줄이고

그만큼 많은 시간을 투자했습니다.

저만의 스타일을 찾는데 많은 고민을 했습니다.

프리랜서 일러스트레이터에게 중요한 것은 채용되기 위해서는 독특하고 일관된

스타일이 필요하다는 생각입니다. 
그림을 잘 그리는 사람은 많지만, 인정 받을 수 있는 본인만의 예술 스타일을 갖는 것이

종종  그림을 잘 그리는 것보다 더 중요합니다.

당시 저는 자신만의 스타일을 정하지 못할까 염려했고 그래서 
학교에서 수강 시간을 줄이고 나만의 포트폴리오를 위해 더 많은 시간을  작업에

쏟아 부었습니다.

그러면 좀 더 오랫동안 '학생' 신분으로 있겠지만 적어도
졸업할 때쯤에는 프리랜서 일러스트레이션 분야의 확실한 미래를 갖게 될 것이라는

생각이었습니다..

수많은 이메일, 홍보용 엽서, 그리고 행운을 시험해 볼 수 있는 모든 마케팅 활동을 거친 후,
첫 번째 고객을 확보하고 에이전시와 계약을 맺을 수 있었습니다.
지금까지 저는 Sallie Mae, Hollywood Reporter, Plansponsor 등 다양한 고객들과 일해왔으며
어린이용 그림책도 곧 출간될 예정입니다.

당신이 스스로 무언가를 성취하려고 노력할 때, 그것은 종종 매우 외로운 여정이라는 생각입니다.
저는 운이 좋게도 친구와 가족들이 저를 지지해 주었지만 결국은  내 작업실에 혼자 앉아

극심한 자기 의심과 좌절과 싸우면서 예술 작품을 만들려고 노력하는 자신에게 달려 있었습니다.
어떻게 제가 그 과정을 극복했나 돌이켜 생각해보면 그 때는 제가 다음에  해야 할 일에만

집중하고 있었습니다.

상업 예술가로서 자신의 작품의 퀄리티 측면에서 자신의 위치를 ​​아는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다.
좋은 작품을 계속해서 살펴보고 자신의 작품과 비교하여 얼마나 좋은 작품인지 확인해야 합니다.
그 격차를 줄이기 위해 노력할 수 있도록 개선해야 합니다.
그 격차를 줄이는 것이 이 일을 시작하려는 아티스트에게 제가 줄 수 있는 최고의 조언이라고 생각합니다.

Bookstores in any city are my favorite places to visit. This piece was inspired by the City Lights Bookstore in North Beach. I've only been there once but really loved it.

 

 

친구가 방문했다면 데리고 가보고 싶은 현지 명소는 어디인가요?

샌프란시스코는 도쿄와 서울 외에 제가 가장 좋아하는 도시 중 하나입니다. 

제 가장 친한 친구가  한국에서 저를 방문한다면 저는 반드시 그들을 모든 관광지에

데려갈 것입니다.
기라델리 스퀘어에서 달콤한 음식을 먹고 피셔맨스 워프에서 바다사자를 구경할 거예요.
케이블카도 타고,  페리 빌딩의 상점을 방문하고 차이나타운에 있는 쿠키 공장 점포에서

무료 샘플을 받기도 하구요.
저는 샌프란시스코에 있는 아름다운 빅토리아 스타일의 건물을 정말 사랑합니다.
돌아다니면서 유명한 집들도 다 구경하고 사진도 찍을 거예요.
또한 Lands End에서 하이킹을 하고 Fort Mason에서 어떤 이벤트가 진행되고 있는지 확인하고
그런 다음 Dogpatch로 가서 미술관을 방문할 것입니다.

개인적으로 제가 좋아하는 것은 여기저기 서점에 들러 잡지를  읽거나 디자인 상품 매장을

방문해보는 것입니다.

저는 일러스트레이터로서 이 흥미진진한 새로운 여정에서 지금까지의 성취를 많은 

사람들에게 빚지고 있습니다.
그동안 저를 도와주고 응원해준 사람들 중  나의 가장 큰 후원자는 늘 가족이었고,
특히 남편은 처음부터 저를 믿어줬어요.
또한 제가 아마추어 아티스트에서 전문가로 성장할 수 있도록 도와주신

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyce Cho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joyce, how do you think about risk?
I think the biggest risk I took was leaving a decade-long career in corporate marketing

to go to art school. So, I’ll talk about the risks people take with their careers. In my case,

the decision changed the entire course of my life, and now I’m working full-time

as a freelance illustrator.

I hadn’t really drawn or painted much before, but I vaguely admired the idea of bringing to life

the images in my head. So, overall, quitting my job to pursue a career in art was definitely

an irrational and risky move. But it all worked out pretty well for me because I was at a point

in my life where I learned that nothing really comes free. I had to put in the work, enduring

many days and nights of ambiguity, rejection, and frustration.

I think when we are faced with a decision that opens doors to the unfamiliar, we tend to think

too much about the ‘what ifs.’

 

But looking back, I think my crazy career move was possible because I was mostly focused

on how exciting my future as an artist would be if everything worked out fine, and then

just put in the work needed to make that happen.

 

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When you visit my portfolio site, you’ll see the headline: “Illustrations that celebrate

the beauty in our everyday lives.” I draw people and the environments we inhabit,

focusing on the small details. I enjoy drawing scenes of San Francisco city streets and

all the people who are out and about, but I also like to draw food and flowers.

Overall, my illustrations focus on positivity, warmth, diversity, and love.

 

As mentioned before, I left my job in marketing to pursue a career in art. I had already

reached a point in my career where I felt like I could predict where it was headed.

I was a workaholic all my life, working around the clock and spending weekends glued

to my laptop answering emails. The money wasn’t bad, but at one point, I realized maybe

I could redirect all of this dedication and energy into something that I could call my own,

and that somewhere down the road, I might be able to become really good at it.

I had always loved illustration, and maybe that could be my next passion in life.

 

I enrolled in art school, and then COVID hit two months in. I spent the next few years taking

classes on Zoom, painting and drawing in my home studio until the pandemic eased.

A few semesters into school, I realized how tough it would be to make it as an illustrator,

especially as someone with such little experience.

I worked extra hard, cutting back on hours of sleep and dedicating as much time

as possible to improving my craft.

 

I struggled a lot with finding my own style. It’s important for freelance illustrators to have

a unique and consistent style in order to get hired. There are so many people out there

who can draw well, but having a recognizable art style is often more important than being

able to draw. I was scared that I would never be able to settle on a style of my own and

get client work, so I enrolled in fewer classes at school and spent the extra time on making

my own portfolio. That way, I would be a ‘student’ for a longer period of time but at least know

that by the time I graduate, I would have a future in freelance illustration.

After many cold emails, promotional postcards, and any marketing activities I could try my luck at,

I was able to get my first client and sign with an agency.

So far, I have worked with a wide variety of clients like Sallie Mae,

The Hollywood Reporter, Plansponsor, and many more, and have a children’s picture book on the way.

 

I think when you are trying to achieve something for yourself, it is often a very lonely journey.

I was fortunate enough to have friends and family support me along the way,

but at the end of the day, it was all up to me, sitting alone in my studio, trying to make art

while battling crippling self-doubt and frustration. Looking back, I think what got me through

those times was just focusing on what I needed to do next.

As a commercial artist, I think it’s important to know where you stand in terms of quality.

You have to keep looking at good work and comparing it with your own to see how much

you need to improve so that you can work towards closing that gap.

I think closing that gap is the best advice I can give to any artist who wants to start doing

commercial work—there is no better way.

 

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to

take them around to?
San Francisco is one of my most favorite cities, other than Tokyo and Seoul. If my best friends

were to visit me from Korea, I’d definitely take them to all the touristy spots.

We’ll get some sweet stuff at Ghirardelli Square and watch the sea lions at the Fisherman’s Wharf,

ride the cable car, visit the shops at the Ferry Building and get free samples at the fortune

cookie factory in Chinatown. I have immense appreciation for all the beautiful Victorian style

houses in the City, so we’ll go around and see all the famous ones and take pictures.

We’ll also hike at Lands End, check out whatever event is going on at Fort Mason and

then head to Dogpatch to visit the art galleries. Personally, all I like to do is hang out

independent bookstores to check out zines or visit design goods stores.

 

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition

and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe my achievements so far in this exciting new journey as an illustrator to many people

who have helped and cheered me along the way. My biggest supporter has always been my family,

especially my husband, who believed in me from the beginning.

I’m also thankful to the faculty at the Academy of Art University in SF for helping me grow from

an amateur artist to a professional, and to Tom Froese for being a mentor whose words got me

through really dark times. I think every artist needs a mentor to look up to for guidance and

words of encouragement. I was fortunate enough to have a few and to be part of an illustrator group

that meets regularly to share updates on our creative endeavors, sympathize with,

and cheer each other up in times of hardship.
